10 Piece Brass Ensemble
The format of the 10 Piece Brass Ensemble was established by the premier British "Philip Jones Brass Ensemble" which transformed the image of the brass family throughout the world, also creating a legacy of repertoire for this ensemble. This is an orchestral brass ensemble rather than the British"Brass Band". If you need parts transposing for German Brass ensembles, just email me your requirements.
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind - Parry arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba

The most beautiful Hymn of all! I have sung it at weddings and funerals (actually I can hardly ever sing it as it chokes me up). The original, "Long Since in Egypt's Plenteous Land" was part of the Parry's Oratorio "Judith", with these words added later by John Whittier. I wrote this version for my own wedding and it has been used at many others.

As you will hear, it helps if the congregation are musical or have some sort of direction as there are several traps to fall into, but it is definitely worth the effort. A single line vocal part is included and there is also a full SATB choir score. The piece also works well as an instrumental pre-wedding piece or as an interlude.

It is also available in a version for Brass Quintet and for Brass Band

Tintern Tuckets - Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba

Flourishes, Sennets and Tuckets are all types of fanfare used by William Shakespeare in his plays to announce the arrival of notable personages or as musical interludes. If played as a suite with its companion pieces I suggest the order "Tintern Tuckets", "Scotney Sennets" and then "Fountains Flourish".

The ruins of the once thriving Tintern Abbey stands on the Welsh banks of the River Wye and dates from the 12th Century. "Tintern Tuckets" is full of short fanfares which reappear in various guises indicating the arrival of Nobility and lesser mortals. The Abbey is still a busy site but now soley frequented by tourists. Concert pitch parts are available for German Brass ensembles - Just Ask!

Scotney Castle dates from the 12th Century and was originally a fortified country house, but its sole remaining turret springs out of a lake with picturesque surrounding gardens, making it an oasis of calm is this busy part of England.

Fountains' Flourish - Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba

If played as a suite with its companion pieces I suggest the order "Tintern Tuckets", "Scotney Sennets" and then "Fountains Flourish".

Fountains' Flourish is a bright, light, modestly flashy little number! Fountains Abbey is one of the largest monastic ruins in England and is situated near Ripon in North Yorkshire. This lively movement would also be well suited as a wedding interlude or entracte (if you are lucky enough to have a 10 piece brass ensemble at your wedding). The score is quite complex and performers need to be both competent and confident! Concert pitch parts available for German Brass ensembles - Just Ask!

There is an excellent recording of Fountains Flourish (on Spotify) by the German "Ensemble 23*12" on their album "Weihnachtsfruende".

Hansel and Gretel - Prayer - Humperdinck arr. Alun Cook

Soft and beautiful, the brass at their most subtle. Arranged for a friend's wedding and used at many more. A timpani parts is provided and although not essential, it does add significantly to the performance.

I Was Glad - Parry arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone, Tuba and Timpani (optional choir)

Ultimate wedding music! This anthem has famously been used at every coronation since 1902. This new arrangement (2013) has been written so that it may be performed with or without a choir. The section from letter E to letter J is often omitted when performed other than at a coronation. It is a great shame to exclude this lovely section of the work, so it is scored so that it may be played without a choir if required.

Jerusalem - Parry arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone, Tuba and Timpani

This glorious anthem stirs many a heart. Add to that a 10 brass ensemble and I am in heaven! Very popular as wedding music (for which this arrangement was made) and increasingly popular at other events. It may be performed as a concert piece or as an accompaniment for singers.

Sheep May Safely Graze - J.S.Bach arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba

A beautiful, peaceful aria from Bach's Cantata BWV 208. I have "freely transcribed" this as the range of the brass instruments does not allow a simple transcription, so enjoy the lush sound of the trombones and horn, and savour the distinctly modern harmonies (but not as wild as Grainger's wonderful "Blithe Bells")

Prince of Denmark's March (Trumpet Voluntary) - Jeremiah Clarke arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba

TWO VERSIONS are available here. This famous march, frequently played at weddings, features a solo trumpet. The version in the ORIGINAL KEY sounds much better (brighter) but is harder to play as the 2nd trumpet part is high. The soloist usually plays on a D trumpet (part provided). The EASY KEY version is in Bb and simpler for Bb trumpets to play but the texture is a little muddy and I would go for the ORIGINAL KEY version if you have strong players. The two versions are scored differently and parts are not interchangeable

It is also available in a version for Brass Quintet

10 PIECE CHRISTMAS BRASS TOP
Christmas on The Downs - Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba
holly icon

This medley takes four traditional carols and adds a little modern Christmas spice. "I Saw Three Ships", The Sussex Mummers' Carol, The Sussex Carol ("On Christmas Night all Christians Sing") and "Wassail" all have ancient roots and are presented here in a modern context.

In Sussex, a county on the south coast of England, the magnificent chalk cliffs named “The Seven Sisters” provide wonderful views of any approaching ships, although on Christmas Day in the morning one might hope that the sailors were all safely tucked up in bed. The words of “I Saw Three Ships” are from the 17th Century and as they claim to see ships sailing into Bethlehem, seeing them from the Sussex cliffs seems just as likely.

“Mummers” were seasonal plays performed by amateur actors and the Sussex Mummers' Carol has ancient origins but is now most usually heard in a gloriously rich instrumental version by Percy Grainger. The melody of “The Sussex Carol” (On Christmas Night all Christians Sing) was noted down by Ralph Vaughan Williams (a notable collector of folk-songs) in Horsham in the 1900's but its origins are thought to be from the 17th Century. “Wassailing” involves singing and most probably involves drinking copious quantities of “Cider”. The southern counties are home to cider orchards where the traditional ritual of “Wassailing” celebrated the apple harvest and the hopes for the coming year's crop. It also came to mean going from door to door singing carols. “Waes Hael” comes from the Anglo-Saxon and translates as “are you well” or “be thou hail”.

The parts are not exceptionally hard although 1st Trumpet and Trombone are quite high (Trumpet 4 also has a solo role).

For Unto Us a Child is Born - Handel arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone, Tuba and Timpani

Taken from Handel's "Messiah" and often performed at Christmas, this glorious piece shows of the sparkling virtuosity of the performers. Strong players are needed, especially on Horn and Trombone 1 (doubling the horn part is quite acceptable). This is a showpiece and not an accompaniment for a choir.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, with Fanfare and Descant - Mendelssohn arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone, Tuba with optional Timpani and Cymbals.
holly icon

This version includes a Fanfare which may be played either as an introduction or as an interlude before the final verse. The first two verses may be sung with the traditional Mendelssohn harmonies, and the final verse sung in unison with the new descant. Optional Timpani and Suspended Cymbal parts are included and a descant part and piano part are included for choir rehearsals.

You will find many published versions of Mendelssohn's music both in G major and F major. This version is in F major as in is easier for those singing the descant.

This version includes an original Fanfare and Descant and harmonisation for all verses. The Fanfare may be played as an introduction or as an interlude before the final verse (there is an alternative introduction in this case). Scored for the established 10 piece brass line-up, timpani and cymbals parts are included although not essential. Versions for Wind Band, Brass Quintet and Orchestral Brass are also available but the harmonies differ so do not mix the parts.
