20 Family Saxophone Carols
- Trad. arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Quartet
- Alto (or Soprano), Alto, Tenor (or Alto) and Baritone (or tenor)
These traditional Christmas carols and songs have been arranged for 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone in suitable keys for carol-singing. I have provided extra parts to provide more flexibility. There is a Soprano part to cover 1st Alto, an extra Alto part to cover the Tenor line, and an extra Tenor part which does an adequate job of covering the Baritone part if you are without that luxury. The carols are also available for other combinations - Brass Quartet, Clarinet Quartet and Woodwind Quartet - but the parts are not interchangeable as the keys and harmonies have been changed to better suit each combination.

For Unto Us a Child is Born
- Handel arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Quartet - Alto (or Soprano), Alto, Tenor and Baritone
For Unto Us a Child is Born from "The Messiah" is frequently performed at Christmas, and this arrangement is fun to play and not too difficult, although Alto 1 needs to be a bit nifty around the high notes. This arrangement is best suited to AATB but I've included a Soprano part in case you want to play SATB but if you do, you also need the SATB 2nd Alto part instead of the original Alto 2 part.

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
- Trad. arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Quartet
- 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone
God Rest You Merry Gentlemen is my favourite Christmas arrangement for Saxophones! It covers a range of styles from a heavy gutsy start, to lyricism and delicacy in the various verses. It can be played as a concert piece or as an accompaniment for a congregational carol. It works well with doubled parts the more the merrier - but care must be used to maintain the balance all the parts are so enjoyable to play it is easy to get carried away!

Personent Hodie - Fantasia
- Trad. arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Quartet
- 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone (optional Soprano Part for Alto 1)
This Christmas Carol is based on an old German melody made popular by Gustav Holst. It has a strong driving melody and is usually sung by the men of a choir. This arrangement uses the melody quite loosely and exploits its ambiguous rhythmic feel. A soprano part is available although its range necessitates some compromises. If you would a like a shorter version (or wish to avoid the Fugue), a judicious cut may be made from the last beat of the bar before letter G to the upbeat to letter J.

Huron Carol
- Canadian Traditional arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Quintet
- 2 Altos, 2 Tenors and Baritone, or 3 Altos, Tenor and Baritone
The Huron Carol has one of the most beautiful and simple melodies I know. The resulting arrangement has a slightly "rocky" feel and is not an accompaniment for choir, just incidental music for the season, and would work particularly well in a resonant acoustic. The 3rd Alto part is an alternative for 1st Tenor and needs a strong player.

| CHRISTMAS SEXTET |

The Santa Express
- Alun Cook
Saxophone Sextet
- 4 Altos, Tenor and Baritone, or 3 Altos, 2 Tenors and Baritone.
Written for 6 saxophones (AAAATB or AAATTB), this is a light-hearted piece in the Christmas spirit! It starts with the instrumentalist "huffing" into their instruments to acheive a steam locomotive sound - very effective when done well - very dangerous with youngsters, but you can always miss the first 8 bars! The Santa Express has proved highly popular and is also available for 2 Altos with Piano, as a Piano Duet, and for full Orchestra.

For Unto Us a Child is Born
- George Frederick Handel arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Octet
- 2 Sopranos, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones with optional Bass Sax part
A glorious piece of Handel, taken from "The Messiah" and a real favourite at Christmas. The parts are straight forward requiring some agility and neat tonguing. The Bass part is optional

In Dulci Jubilo
- Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) - arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Octet
- 2 Sopranos, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones with optional Bass Sax part
Originating from the 14th century this classic european carol has survived in various interpretations, from J.S.Bach to Mike Oldfield. For me it is this version by Samuel Scheidt that is the most magical. His scoring was for two four-part choirs with two solo trumpeters. Here the solo trumpet parts are scored for the two soprano saxophones and for performance antiphonal placing would be ideal. The other parts are integrated throughout the score. The Bass saxophone is entirely optional.

The Santa Express
- Alun Cook
Saxophone Octet
- 2 Sopranos, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones with optional Bass
Deep in the depths of the Kent countyside at Christmas time, the Steam Railways run "Santa Specials" as a Christmas treat for the young and old alike and this light-hearted composition gives a hint of both Christmas and the steam locomotives. This version is for Saxophone Octet (SSAATTBB with optional Bass). This popular piece is also available for Sextet, 2 Altos and Piano, Flute and Piano, Orchestra, Wind Band and as a Piano Duet Also available for Saxophone Sextet, 2 Altos (or Flute) and Piano, Orchestra and Piano Duet

Shchedryk - A New Year's Carol
- Mykola Leontovych (Ukrainian Trad.) arr. Alun Cook
Saxophone Octet
- 2 Sopranos, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors, 2 Baritones with optional Bass Sax part
In "the West" we know this as "The Carol of the Bells", but the original was written as a New Year's carol (or Shchedrivka) by Mykola Leontovych based on a Ukrainian folk song melody which tells the story of a Swallow which flies into the house and tells of the joys of spring to come. It is still regularly performed by choirs in its original form in the Ukraine and beyond with their magnificent choral sound.

A Winter's Tale
- Alun Cook
Single Reed Ensemble - for 3 Bb Clarinets, 2 Alto Saxophones and Bass Clarinet
Soothing music to lull your children to sleep, but like all good stories there are moments of intrigue and suspense. This is the original scoring for 3 Bb Clarinets, 2 Alto Saxophones and Bass Clarinet although I have it in mind to add words as a Christmas carol. The individual parts are not hard but they are quite independent at times. Listen to the MP3 to hear a performance.
