Belles at Christmas
- Alun Cook
2 Trumpets, French Horn, Trombone and Tuba (and Jingles)
Belles at Christmas might best be used as a little Christmas overture. It is a medley of three original Christmas carols and you will hear snippets of more familiar Christmas tunes from time to time. The Carols themselves are "Come and Hear the Christmas Story", "The Robin's Tale" and "Bethlehem Ride". The Belles in question are both Brass and Beautiful! (Alternative Brass Band parts are included in the set - Tenor Horn, Treble Clef Bb Trombone and EEb Bass)

Huron Carol
- Canadian Traditional arr. Alun Cook
2 Trumpets, French Horn, Trombone and Tuba
The Huron Carol has one of the most beautiful and simple melodies I know. The resulting arrangement has a slightly "rocky" feel and is not an accompaniment for choir, just incidental music for the season. This is an extensive reworking of my original arrangement for saxophones.

The carol incorporates a familiar counter-melody sung by the male voices (or covered by the brass). The score is free and choir and instrumental parts are for sale here. There are also other versions available with piano accompaniment and with a Trombone obligato part (see above). There are also other versions available with piano accompaniment and also with a Trombone obbligato part (see under Carols). Although this version was conceived as an accompaniment it works well as a stand-alone piece without the choir. A section is also included in the instrumental medley Belles at Christmas. |

Christmas on The Downs
- Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone and Tuba
This medley takes four traditional carols and adds a little modern Christmas spice. "I Saw Three Ships", The Sussex Mummers' Carol, The Sussex Carol ("On Christmas Night all Christians Sing") and "Wassail" all have ancient roots and are presented here in a modern context. In Sussex, a county on the south coast of England, the magnificent chalk cliffs named “The Seven Sisters” provide wonderful views of any approaching ships, although on Christmas Day in the morning one might hope that the sailors were all safely tucked up in bed. The words of “I Saw Three Ships” are from the 17th Century and as they claim to see ships sailing into Bethlehem, seeing them from the Sussex cliffs seems just as likely. “Mummers” were seasonal plays performed by amateur actors and the Sussex Mummers' Carol has ancient origins but is now most usually heard in a gloriously rich instrumental version by Percy Grainger. The melody of “The Sussex Carol” (On Christmas Night all Christians Sing) was noted down by Ralph Vaughan Williams (a notable collector of folk-songs) in Horsham in the 1900's but its origins are thought to be from the 17th Century. “Wassailing” involves singing and most probably involves drinking copious quantities of “Cider”. The southern counties are home to cider orchards where the traditional ritual of “Wassailing” celebrated the apple harvest and the hopes for the coming year's crop. It also came to mean going from door to door singing carols. “Waes Hael” comes from the Anglo-Saxon and translates as “are you well” or “be thou hail”. The parts are not exceptionally hard although 1st Trumpet and Trombone are quite high (Trumpet 4 also has a solo role).

For Unto Us a Child is Born
- Handel arr. Alun Cook
4 Trumpets, French Horn, 4 Trombone, Tuba and Timpani
Taken from Handel's "Messiah" and often performed at Christmas, this glorious piece shows of the sparkling virtuosity of the performers. Strong players are needed, especially on Horn and Trombone 1 (doubling the horn part is quite acceptable). This is a showpiece and not an accompaniment for a choir. |

The first two verses may be sung with the traditional Mendelssohn harmonies, and the final verse sung in unison with the new descant. You will find many published versions of Mendelssohn's music both in G major and F major. This version is in F major as in is easier for those singing the descant. |

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, with Fanfare and Descant
- Mendelssohn/Alun Cook
3 Trumpets, 4 Horns (although 2 will do), 3 Trombones and Tuba, with optional Euphonium and Percussion.
This version includes a Fanfare and new descant. Verses 1 and 2 may be sung in traditional (Mendelssohn's) four part harmony. These harmonies will fit even though the brass parts are developed. The final verse should be sung in unison with the optional descant part (provided). The Fanfare may be played at the start of the piece, or before the final verse, in which case use the last 2 bars of verse 1 as an introduction. Scored for 3 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, Tuba and Percussion. The Percussion and Euphonium parts are optional, as are the 3rd and 4th Horn parts, although it would be sad to lose the Horns! A set of Bb and Eb parts for Horns, Trombones and Basses can be supply for those using treble clef musicians. Versions for Wind Band and Brass Quintet are also available but the harmonies differ so do not mix the parts. |
